Just thought Id share some pics of what my family and I are doing to try and stay warm in N. Az. We are going for inexpensive ! Its 15' dia. I got in a bit of a hurry and busy at the same time, so made allot of mistakes (id do it quite different if we do another one) so far in these pics all we have really spent money on (besides a few tools) is nails and some lag bolts.

Welcome to Permies!

That looks pretty awesome. I'd love to see more pictures as the progress happens.

I have very little experience with roundwood construction, with the exception of 1-night-stay servival shelters while back-packing so I'm not sure how much help I could be for you. Keep up the good work!

Hi Scott,

Welcome to Permies!!!

For a first attempt and getting ahead of yourself, it looks as though you have done very well. Many a "homesteader" will build such a vernacular structure to get started (and learn) while the "feel" their way around the land. Then they can build a more enduring and permanent structure. Again welcome, and we all will look forward to following the progression. Thanks for sharing the photos.

Regards,

j

Once you complete a larger structure in the future, this one could serve as a great spot for the kids to learn and play. Put them in charge of maintaining it.

I built something similar in 1983 when I was 19. My brother and I were searching for work at mining camps near the north shore of Lake Superior. We were toasty warm while others in damp tents nearly died of cold.
