Interesting new spainish solar powerstations using salts to store heat
http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20120302-how-salt-stores-solar-power
Not sure if such technology can be scaled down to house by house level but interesting never the less plus they look a lot better than a nuc power station .
In the second station I could see permies growing stuff underneath the mirrors

That was interesting - I've always had a fascination with the ability of salt to conduct energy. We certainly have enough salt available to us!

I wonder if the first site was a prototype for the second one - the first using heated oil, and the second going right to steam from water.

I have the impression that there are three seperate bits involved
First site using the lens to heat the oil then use the oil to generate elecy or store energy in salt
Second site using mirrors to heat water make steam then elecy or store energy in salt
I would be very interested in a small scale system storing energy in salt - RMH to generate electricity and heat home anyone ?
