controlling outdoor flies

So I am living my dream...moved to the country about 9 months ago. My neighbors are goats and cows (good neighbors to have) and with them comes a huge fly problem. We are talking about hundreds if not thousands of flies around my house. Does anyone have a solution for controlling these annoying flies without taking down the beneficial insects?

Do you know what sort of flies they are?

They are missing the third part of the rotation -- chickens.

Imagine a conversation between two chickens coming upon that pasture:

Henny Penny: "Hey look, there's a steaming pile of cowshit over there."

Chicken Little: "Wanna check it out? Maybe there's a bunch of juicy maggots in it."

Henny Penny: "Yum! Watch and see how far I can fling this when I scratch."

Chickens have gross eating habits. But by searching out all the maggots they can find, they do control the fly population.

I have no idea what kind of flies they are!

See if you can figure it out. Blackflies and horse flies are both very annoying, but their habits and thus methods of controlling them are quite different. If you can get dead ones to examine, if you can notice details of their habits, that will help.

The best solutions I have is Rescue Fly traps. lots of them scattered through out the area. They include an attractant that is very effective.


there are also homemade versions but I find these are the best.

I have also used fly predators for Arbico with some success, but it is a more expensive route.

Porbably will not use them this year as I do not have as many larger animals.

Chickens - you need to interupt their lifecycle before they get airborn. What better way than by turning them into eggs?

Chickens are not going to help unless the neighbors want chickens.

Sprinkle the biological along the fence line at dusk and put the traps up away from the house.
