Raised bed with hoops from bike rims and crutches.

I built this bed for my mother.
The soil is at 3 feet off the ground and about 10" deep.
I filled the bottom with a double layer of sweet gum balls, for aeration and weight reduction.

The bed  is built of cedar fence pickets.
The hoops are bicycle rims, supported by bits of old wooden crutches.
I'm want to enclose the sides and ends, with netting and/or plastic, but I'm still working through how I want to do that.

Here's the second flush of turnip greens from this bed.
The were transplants from another bed, that had been doing poorly.
They have been growing like crazy in the new bed.

You come up with really clever ideas for reuse.

This year I've enclosed the bed entirely:

I am struggling a bit with harvest.
I'm trying to take all but one leaf from each plant, but some of them are right next to each other, making that determination difficult
I should probably pull some plants, giving more space for the remaining plants and making harvest easier.
I just need someplace else to plant them...

Even at a mere 2 feet deep, accessing plants at the rear of the enclosure can be a pain in the back because I have to duck under the canopy, putting me in am awkward position.
Most people using this bed are no where near as tall, so I won't be adding a second door.

I harvested a lot of cilantro from this bed and one other and tried make a cilantro pesto.
I put too many pepitas in it so it eats more like a hummus.
Still a nice yield to get just for weeding!
