Good evening friends! How are you? I'd like to find out how do we combat slag and other types of industrial pollution that has left generations of waste and debris in our soil and end up becoming ineffective for growing and things of that nature.
How we test our soil to tell if it's filthy and clean enough to use again? I'm from an urban area and my soil has been known for slag for a very long time. Looking for more ways to keep soil very pure for future generations to come. Any plants that can deal with the conditions of the soil? All I know are sunflowers and sometimes cattails. Please let me know in this forum and please exchange me some ideas and tips to not only make soils flourish again, but all gardens and surrounding ecosystems again in the Purple Moosage. Wanna become a more sound steward of the environment and my community. Good night!

If you look to the bottom of this page, there are links to similar threads discussing soil remediation that will give you really helpful advice.

A search of the word "remediation" in the top banner will also bring up many threads.

Here are just a few to get you started -

first, we need to know what is your criteria for better soil and life?

Building soil health is step one after we know your criteria.

I recommend Dr. Bryant Redhawks Epic Soil Series:

This is a good one to start with What we need to know about Soil:

My goals are to free the soil from slag and other large waste as well as water, then plant stuff to create a system that combats the remaining filth in our soil and beautify all landscapes wild or cultivated for all to flourish wherever they may be.
Next, connect all soil, water and life together to bridge for richness and a better culture to pass on to future generations and the next. After that, I'd like to pass my efforts to others around the world to aid them for a better future and way of life.
I want my efforts to become a model for the entire earth and how they enrich lives and generations and which benefit from the labor that come with it. Better soil and water lead to better biodiversity and better life. Take care.

To me, slag seems to vary in what pollutants it might hold. Have you had the slag and soil tested to know what you are dealing with? Does it seem to be trending more acidic or basic?

I think, in this case, a soil test would be valuable.

Forgot! I'm talking about generation toxic waste, chemicals that are left in our soil, especially in urban areas and places near old or abandoned industrial plants and factories that release amounts of waste that harbor forever elements that will go into our landscapes and the rest of our society. Thanks!
