I've been growing a few ramps under some old apple trees for a few years. I don't think the canopy of the apple trees is really thick enough for the ramps to thrive, but they're surviving and we've harvested a few leaves. I believe they do best in dense hardwood forest.
they have a really strong allium smell and flavor, but there's definitely something different about them. the flavor is similar to fragrant spring tree (Toona sinensis) to my taste. very tasty and easy to grow from bulbs.
growing from seed is more difficult, but certainly more economical if you've got suitable ground and you're patient. either way, I recommend them.
