July's session covered the carbon methodologies available to low- and mid-tech distributed biochar production. This one turns to the practical side: what actually has to happen, and in what order, for a pile of char to become a credit someone will buy? Wyatt Catron of 3Degrees, who presented in July, will be on hand for follow-up questions from that session.
Most of what determines whether you have a project is decided before there is a project. A producer with a kiln running today is already generating — or quietly destroying — the evidence base a carbon project will need: where the feedstock came from, when production started, what got measured, and where the char ended up. Those records cost almost nothing to keep now and are expensive or impossible to reconstruct later. Alicia will walk the full project lifecycle from both sides at once — what is happening on paper, and what is happening at the kiln that same week — defining terms like PDD, MRV, and verification as they come up rather than in the abstract.
The session follows the whole arc rather than any single stage, so that by the end the sequence is clear: what comes first, what depends on it, and where a producer's own choices carry the most weight. You'll leave with three things — a records checklist you can start keeping this week, a look at what a project design document (PDD) actually contains, and five questions you can run on your own operation to see where you stand.

Alicia Klepfer has spent a decade on carbon projects — biochar, soil carbon, and methane — inside companies, now as a consultant. She's worked the whole arc: deciding whether a project is viable and which standard fits, then producing the records that hold up when a verifier comes asking. She's visited 20+ production sites and farms, and written the SOPs operators actually use. She's authored a methodology and comments on drafts in public consultation, arguing for rules a working producer can follow. Carbon removal and avoidance is why she got into this industry, and she believes it only scales if producers understand the system themselves.
For many BOS practitioners, carbon credits are not just an abstract climate finance tool. They may become a real revenue pathway that helps make local biochar work pencil out, especially for Biochar as a Service providers.
This session is relevant for project developers, practitioners, land managers, service providers, and anyone working with biomass that is produced, processed, stranded, or applied close to the source.
BOS promotes practical, place-based distributed biochar systems that create jobs, reduce wildfire risk, protect local water cycles, reduce transport burdens, and keep carbon in the landscape.
