I finally got my "retort adjacent" method set up.

My school has been busy replacing their old metal trash cans with plastic ones. Which means that I get as many of the old ones as I want instead of them being thrown in the dumpster! Once I pull off the rubber lined feet pieces it leaves four small holes in the bottom (top once I put it in the burn barrel upside down) for gasses to escape and burn off.

I already have a burn barrel that has LOTS of holes around the sides, I thought there might be too many, but it turned out to be exactly what works for me.

I stuffed the metal garbage can full of pieces of wood a little longer than 2 feet, flipped it upside down in the center of the burn barrel, and then filled the spaces around it with weeds and some junk wood, everything burned for about 3 hours and when it was done the garbage can was filled with perfect biochar!

Great creativity and resourcefulness on reusing the metal garbage cans into a useful activity.

Switching from electric heat to a rocket mass heater reduces your carbon footprint as much as parking 7 cars
