When I first started to keep goats, I was told by all the other goat keepers that it was absolutely essential to own a copy of The Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm and Stable by Juliette de Baïracli Levy. I spent ages searching for a copy and eventually bought a brand new one when it came back into print, It soon became my animal-care 'bible', though my copy is starting to show its age...

I was delighted to find out that a video has been made about Juliette's life and work. Here's a taster.

Full movie here. Enjoy!

This is one of my favorites as well.
so so good, it's really an arsenal for attacking disease and pestilence on the farm
the methods she gives for gathering and preparation of herbs are solid and wonderful
awesome awesome materia medica, short, sweet, and to the point
great section on dogs (i would like to read her other books on rearing dogs)
interesting historical stuff (reminded me of maude grieve herbals)

thanks for the video
is there an herbal for pigs that you know of? its the one animal that is left out of this book

can't thank you enough for this.
our neighbors are vets -- one horses, one small animals.
been preaching the herbs to them, they are open but skeptical.
the book & video might just help soften them a bit.

In her book, she states that she has been practicing veterinary medicine for 40 years, and has never owned a syringe.

Sir Albert Howard was a staunch supporter of her, and her medicine.

After reading through the descriptions of the various herbal medicines, one gets a good feeling for what herbs should be planted in every meadow/pasture. If we provide the proper herbs in the pasture, our animals are smart enough to self medicate themselves. This leads to healthier livestock, and reduced vet bills. A WIN/WIN. This book belongs in the library of anybody raising livestock
