Dear All

I have been given a project to build a maggot pit for a farm. the farm is under strict health and safety regulations so I can't just build anything. Does any one have any designs for a maggot pit or container that can be used to encourage maggots to feed in etc. I have seen a design for a bucket hung up in a tree but my manager says thats no good for the health and safety inspection, so has anyone got any suggestions for any other designs preferably ground based and covered up. Thank a bunch. My email address is szczesnyrafal@yahoo.com, cheers.

Depending on your climate a black soldier fly system may be appropriate. They are a clean, non-smelly equivalent to using ordinary maggots and rapidly break down wastes.

Whatever you do keep botulism in mind. I wouldn't use meat or grains myself.

Also - what size/scale are you looking for? And is this a waste disposal system or are you looking for a yield of maggots as a feed stuff (for chickens for example?)

If you are just looking for small scale waste disposal there is an in-ground system known as the GreenCone.
