Using State and County Land

Does anyone here know what rules, or laws apply to using state and county public lands?

I'm thinking that a lot of great things could happen if this land could be used by people to grow some food and general productive land stewarding. Instead of being clear-cut for the "health" of the forest or whatever.

I recall once hearing that you can live on public land for two weeks until you have to re-locate. Does anyone have any experience with using public lands?

My neighbor Nathan McClintock works on these issues fairly extensively. Some of his work on gardening public land in Alameda county is available here:

pot growers tend to use state land fairly extensively in our area..
