If I want to be sure of a good germination rate I'll have ground up leaves or grass clipping ready to go as mulch before seeding. Pretty much guaranteed.
It always looks good the first few days but young plants can't stand much stress so I don't even bother seeding unless I can mulch too.

Our yard is an acre. I didn't have enough mulch to cover it all.
Everything is surviving just fine though. No issues at all.
