The first picture tries to show what is here.

The second picture is the plan for adding paddocks and hugelkultur.

Thanks to daniel for sending the drone up to take this picture.

The deer and wild turkeys will wipe out anything that is not inside of a fence.

This june, the first paddock was put up and it did keep the deer and turkeys out (although a turkey flew into the paddock yesterday and immediately began freaking out - once I got there, the turkey freaked out even more and discovered it could fly). We then got overrun with chipmunks. In time, chipmunk predators did arrive - so we think that this year will be a better year for gardening.

Building a paddock at basecamp is harder than on the lab. The junkpole needs to be imported from the lab. Plus you can't really use fenceposts - you have to build rockjacks.

And hugelkultur is harder too - we have to import the soil.

I thought I had notes on the bounties that we came up with for basecamp paddocks, but I can't seem to find it.

So a hundred feet of junkpole at the lab is $100 (includes the use of the tractor and auger for digging post holes - but no other tools or materials). 100 feet at basecamp is $200.

100 feet of fence with rockjacks: $200
4-foot wide really good gate with a good latch: $150
12-foot wide really good gate with a good latch: $200
bonus for finishing a paddock: $400

(these prices include materials - as in: the builder buys any materials that need to be bought (I have to do this because previous stuff left oodles of unused screws on the ground))

Rockjacks or posts would need to be about every 20 feet. Fence is 8 feet tall and needs to keep out deer, wild turkeys and dogs. And it needs to be able to keep chickens in.

To start keeping chickens, we need at least four paddocks. Further, I am no longer comfortable keeping chickens until we are growing excellent chicken feed, including winter chicken feed.

🐝 How about more recent aerial pics of the basecamp land, showing the progress? 👍

While not aerial views, you can see more on-the-ground photos of base camp in:
