Hi there,
My wife and I are moving off grid and planning on building a wofati near a stream that runs 6 months of the year. We are trying to decide on the best option for collecting water from the stream, filtering said water so its drinkable and then storing enough water for the other 6 months of the year.
Just wondering if anyone has advice on what filters and containers to use for this that would require no electricity and be low cost. Thank you for your time it means a lot!

Isaac Smeele : Congratulations on your impending Start ! A couple of things, plans are really great and should be updated regularly, the old saw goes

'' Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail ! '' 2nd is -there will be times when you must throw your plans out the window. 1st plan, see link below :

http://www.weather.com/safety/news/10-disaster-preps#/1

Note on page five the absolute minimum number of gallons- per person, per day.

Even the 1st page carries an important everyday message, Always have food in the house, you may not have the money for gas, or the gas to get to

Your money, food in the house and a plan ensures that you don't turn a lack of milk in the house into a Restaurant Bill that will make matters worse !

While considering your early options you should take a look at the Rainwater Catchment , and Grey Water Forum threads !

If you are very lucky you will be able to locate UBC / IBC Containers (international/universal bulk containers (Food Grade) That hold 270 gal., rainwater

can still be collected from off of your Soil covered Wafati as it runs off of Your Wafatis' membrane, properly done much of the filtering is already done !

Any stored water should be protected from direct sunlight even if only painted black- otherwise you will have algae growth in your tanks

My ongoing system includes Multiple clean rinsed gallon milk Jugs that I add bleach to to guarantee 1 months long term storage. At the end of a month

this is recycled and retested !

Otherwise in the same basement storage area I have a sump pump hole that contains potable water !

This is where I set back and follow our fellow members postings ! For the Good of the system ! Big AL

Here is an interesting older thread that might give you some ideas Isaac.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Will look into these for sure!

My first bit of advice is that if you are going to be a mime, you shouldn't talk. Even the tiny ad is nodding:
