I'm growing Sacred Lotus Nelumbo nucifera for my aquaponics system. I had a miniature one in my frog pond but it got overtaken by cattails and died. So I'm growing some of the full-size ones from seed. Virtually all parts are edible. http://www.pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Nelumbo+nucifera

I hope to get some of these too . I hope they will help reduce the pollution ( cow shit ) in my pond .

Ooh, nice! I'm envious.

Lotus stems are used in Kashmiri cuisine, really delicious and beautiful. I've had them in a veg curry, and often in oily-spicy pickles. Yum!

Besides which, they are so beautiful that if they bloom for you, that's worth more than just another vegetable.

They've started growing their second leaves and are starting to really look like little lotus plants!

Putting some of the lotus in individual pots. I'm only doing half of my babies at this time, in case there's something about my potting method they don't like, I don't want to kill them all at the same time....

Very happy to find this thread. We are baby stepping into aquaponics and water plants.
To get our feet wet, so to speak, we are also going to grow sacred lotus and probably just have a regular gold fish in the container pot once the plants are established.

Fast hugelkultur, fences, moss, natural pool conversion, something witty

This looks wonderful!

I see that PFAF says that they are hardy to Zone 5, but the instructions you are following says their water shouldn't be allowed to freeze.  What are your plans for the winter?

Thanks!  The plants will go dormant when it gets cold, so they should be safe staying in the large tank of water, which won't freeze in our climate.

A little update - some of the lotus got eaten by deer, and only one of them is doing very well.  I think I'll be lucky if I get more than one of them to maturity.  But one will be enough to fill this large tank.  If I end up with more than one, I'll try putting one in my frog pond garden.
