I'm looking for people to recount their experience growing hops under apple trees.

The reason I ask, is this article.

We saw, for the first time, woods where apple was the dominant species, together with poplars and maples. Hops grew up many of the apple trees as well; in Hampshire, I used to grow hops in addition to apples, and never expected to see the two plants growing in the wild together. If I had only followed nature as demonstrated at Topolyevka, I could have grown my hops up old Bramley apple trees and saved a great deal in costs by forgoing the posts and wirework I used to train the hops.

That sounds like a good idea. I'm going to try that. I have some Zeus hops that are in a pot and need a good home. I wonder how they will do with the dappled sunlight. Hops like full sun.

My guess is that if hops didn't like dappled shade, they wouldn't be seen growing up apple trees in the wild.

Nature will tell you if it works or not.
