Yes, I think that's a good way to tell if European pears are ripe. Also touch the neck to see if it is just starting to soften just a bit.
Then, bring them inside, put them in a paper bag with a banana. Check each day, when soft enough, eat.
With Asian pears, they will give just a bit. Also, they will start to have an aroma. Also they also will start to separate easily as you gently pull them away. When the first one is ripe to eat (look for brown seeds), the others will be in the approximate time neighborhood.
