Nearly every recipe I run across that calls for castile soap, Dr. Bronner's is mentioned.  Is there something special about this brand?  Are there other less expensive but equally effective brands out there?  Also, does the type of soap matter?  If I wanted the baby mild soap, would that work as well as the "regular" soaps?  I'm pretty ignorant here!  Thanks.

There doesn't look like there are very many options for brands in castile soaps. Dr Bronner's is very well known, organic and free trade which appeals to a wide crowd.

I did find this very detailed tutorial on how to make your own liquid castile at home in a large crock pot. http://www.nwedible.com/how-to-make-diy-liquid-castile-soap/ It looks simple enough that I'm almost tempted to try it myself.

edit: Gave up to soon. This article gives the names of nine other brands http://greencleaning.about.com/od/GreenCleaningProducts/tp/Top-Castile-Soaps-For-Green-Cleaning.htm and saw another ad for a Kirk's Castile soap

Awesome!  Thank you.  I love that tutorial; now I'll have to figure out if I want to spend time or money!

I make pure (olive oil) castile soap and sell it in my Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/SmallbonesShop

It can be grated and made into liquid soap easily. I also use it grated & add washing soda for the laundry.

I happen to think that mine is much better than Dr. Bronner's.

Let's start with the fact that Dr. Bronner doesn't contain preservatives or thickeners, as well as synthetic foaming agents. This soap is ideal for sensitive skin, it leaves the skin soft and hydrated. Their main secret is natural ingredients.completely natural recently stumbled upon this site and realized how much the product's natural composition can change the condition of the skin and improve your health. So Dr. Bronner is absolutely worth the money!
