Black Soldier probably impossible in most of NZ, far north maybe, or perhaps in greenhouse or indoors. I tried eating some housefly (Musca domestica) maggots after 20 minutes cooking, very nice, like cheesy pork, they call them "cheese worms" in parts of Mexico where commonly eaten by humans. The reason they are not often used in most, but not all, countries is because they can carry disease, but 12 minutes cooking will take care of that, kills or neutralizes all organic pathogens. I assume animals need that cooking too but it might just be humans with our weak digestive system, seems like even if an animal is unaffected it might pass the germs on to us if we eat it, but don't know). Another species I'm interested in is Calliphora quadrimaculata, Rango Pango, NZ Blowfy. Early Maori ate the maggots. (which New Zealand Insect. Crowe). Does not need high heat, and no record of it carrying disease, probably tasty, finding them not so easy.
