Paul works very hard with Devaka and loads of other folks (lots of whom are volunteers - thank you!!) to work out any bugs in the permies.com forum software.

By the way, if you notice a bug, or an error, or something not working quite right, check the tinkering forum for whether it's a known issue and add your experience there. If you don't see a thread for your issue, feel free to start a new one!

I just wanted to post a bug in an online state payroll tax reporting system that drives me absolutely bonkers. I'm posting for the sake of commiserating, and to point out that software bugs are kind of a fact of life these days. And folks are hard at work, pretty much constantly, trying to fix them.

This image is from a state unemployment payroll tax account for a client of mine. Their tax was paid in full in Q3 and Q4 of 2017. Now, the software shows $0.01 as past due. ONE PENNY.

Our tax dollars at work there! Gah. (Forcibly holding my head from wanting to bang against the wall...)

Unfortunately, this agency is one of the worst offenders with data bugs and errors. They are struggling to upgrade and improve, though as I know from working with Paul, it's not always easy. It takes loads of testing!

Boy, I sound rather cranky about software bugs in that post! I guess I am hyper-sensitive to bugs with this payroll tax agency because they have had so, so, so many screw ups affecting my clients that the one penny thing is like the straw breaking the camel's back.

Plus, it's been a rough month in my accounting world. :-)

Generally, and when I'm not so stretched, I think software bugs are minor inconveniences, or "first world problems." It's interesting how much they can derail our normal routines though.

What are your software or tech bugs or stories? How do you deal with unexpected derailments?
