We have had several rounds of staff meetings and several private discussions among the staff about how to improve our probation stuff. Overall, this is one of those things where it is an excellent feature and we think it can be made three times better still. I think we finally got to the part, after many months, where we know how we want it to work, but we are now getting into the queue for development.
Yesterday, somebody suggested that another person on permies was less than perfect - which is a violation of our publishing standards (and a violation of our only site rule "be nice"). And this was part of a larger post that had some interesting points to it (including some favorable words about myself!). Fortunately, one of our most trusted staff spotted it and put the post on probation. The staff member suggested that they change the post a bit to keep all of the good points, but to remove the stuff that does not fit with our publication standards. The author then took the time to express .... uh ..... well .... I suspect that the author is not familiar with our publication standards and felt the site
should be managed his way.
I woke up this morning to the aftermath. Everything was sorted. Which is nice - all the hard choices get resolved while I sleep! What an excellent staff!
Because of my vanity or ego or something, I always like to read words of praise for myself. So it is a bummer that this person went .... into such a volatile space.
I wish to publicly state that the behavior of the permies.com staff was utterly perfect. The only thing that could have used a bit of improvement was some of the probation function stuff, which we are working on.
Thank you staff - you are amazing. And I am sorry that unkind words were sent your direction.
And if the author of that post is reading this: thanks for the kind words toward me. Perhaps in time you will understand why this site is managed the way it is.
