I am in the process of cleaning out the "family home" and have found some old shelves and cupboards made out of particle board. I am not a pack rat and don't need/want all of them for their original intended use. A couple are badly stained or damaged with substances of unknown origin so wouldn't be attractive to donate (plus they are super heavy). Is there anything healthy/safe to do with them or is the best option to burn them to the ground, salt the earth (J/K) and move on?
Sonja, I don't feel that burning them or sending them to a landfill would be healthy or safe.
You might be able to find a church that might need some material to build shelves.
Why not put a ad on Craigslist? The recipient would take them all even the stained and damaged ones. Folks are always looking for building materials.

If im not mistaken, theres formaldehyde in particle board. I have no concerns of using it, but would rather keep it out of the ground. Anne gave good idea. Even roadside with "FREE" sign , give it to a flea marketer so they can sell it, goodwill, etc.
Thanks for suggestions! It's out in the country so leaving it outside with a free sign on it would probably not be very effective but I will look into donation/building options.
