Many of you already know of Freecycle.... https://www.freecycle.org/ … but for those of you who don't or may be new here, it is a great website to recycle things you no longer need rather than junking items or adding them to a landfill. Today, we decided to list our 24 year old portable Coleman Powermate 4000 watt generator since we don't need it anymore and haven't used it in a year since we installed a whole house Generac generator....a perk for us in our older years. Within  8 minutes someone requested it, and within the next hour we were helping him load it on his pick up truck. Now, this young man and his wife have a generator they can use when the power goes out...and, it didn't cost them anything.

Nice post Jim.  Thanks for posting that little story.

It makes me think about another thread, here on Permies, that I posted to recently... kind of the complement (or yin for the yang) of your subject here.  Feel welcome to post on that thread too, from your point of view.  https://permies.com/t/56320/Frugal-smug-scored-real-deal

Freecycle can be awesome, or horrible depending on the local "moderator".

I used to use it a lot, then we got a moderator that started rejecting 1/2 my posts.  Ok, on one post where I was offering free pond plants and made a comment that I would also be willing to trade for other pond related items, I can maybe see rejecting that one.  But she also reject a post where I was looking for something and stated that I'd be willing to travel "anywhere" to pick it up, she rejected it because I didn't list where "specifically" I'd be willing to drive.  Pretty soon hardly anyone was posting anymore so I quit.

But as long as you don't have that type of situation, it can be a wonderful.

For my next trick, I'll need the help of a tiny ad ...
