hi all....keeping busy building our cob oven here in Guelph Ontario (not done yet)...but we've just found a perfect spot for us near Harcourt New Brunswick and was wondering if there is anyone out there living in New Brunswick that wouldn't mind being tapped for info....I would truly appreciate it!

Thanks

Greetings to you willowthewitch Hatfield! Though I am currently not living in New Brunswick I did purchase a piece of land around the corner from Harcourt on Emerson Road and this is where I intend to build my home. My situation is complicated given where I currently live and is dependent on finaces (as I am sure is the case for the majority of us) however I hope to be out on the land in Spring 2013 beginning the build. The thought that there is another with similar interests planning a build in the same area is exciting. I would definitely like to chat.

Jeff

Hatfield?? lol Someone tagged that on me, because that's not my last name!!! Guess I gotta go change my profile!! LOL

Anyhoo....

Hi Jeff, nice to meet you. We are still in the process of moving to New Brunswick.....inches away from acquiring the property we desire! Our anticipated move will be in the spring of this year. We currently live in Ontario (blah...too many people and too many people) and it's my hope to get there to get a first planting in for the summer. Oh well...time and finances will tell.

What type of home are you going to build?

Oh how plans do change in the blink of an eye!

My son-in-law just accepted a job in Rothesay, New Brunswick, so the family is moving to that neck of the woods. We have found a wee parcel of land and am awaiting the financial issues to be resolved (hopefully soon) and then, onward!

Should everything fall into place, I am wondering a few things about the general soil type of the Saint John area....gotta have good clay for the cobbing. I may not cob as much as I anticipated since I am tinkering with the idea of sand bag and papercrete to build my house (the kids will have the house that comes with the property but I am building my own). I want to sculpt inside and have a rocket stove for heating which I will make with cob. Of course, will still have to build a cob oven or 5 for the bread making But I've been reading lots about papercrete and am eager to give it a try.

I am also curious how open to alternative building ideas the building codes are in New Brunswick.

We're located in Charlotte County, near the border... having done some research on things like cordwood and straw bale (techniques used in the area), it seems the local rural planning folks are really open to alternative building techniques.

I took a preliminary plan for an octagonal slip-form masonry home (straw seems inappropriate due to humidty; no clay for cob; not fond of the long-term look of cordwood), and the planner guy basically said he couldn't find anything wrong with it. So I may be able to design and build without an architect or an engineer. Then again, I've also got 12 years of construction experience (albeit in a finishing trade) and have pretty much over-engineered the beejeepers out of the thing so it's likely to exceed code ...
