We're located in Charlotte County, near the border... having done some research on things like cordwood and straw bale (techniques used in the area), it seems the local rural planning folks are really open to alternative building techniques.
I took a preliminary plan for an octagonal slip-form masonry home (straw seems inappropriate due to humidty; no clay for cob; not fond of the long-term look of cordwood), and the planner guy basically said he couldn't find anything wrong with it. So I may be able to design and build without an architect or an engineer. Then again, I've also got 12 years of construction experience (albeit in a finishing trade) and have pretty much over-engineered the beejeepers out of the thing so it's likely to exceed code ...
