Biography
I am Jo, and I help run a animal welfare community, stray animal recovery center, and organic farm in Dharamsala, India.

We have lots of animals, mostly dog, cows, and mules, who are here either as residents or to recovery from injury before returning to the road.

We want to use permaculture methods to grow food for humans and animals on the farm, and to start a CSA program.

Our main aim is to help animals and create a more compassionate India.

Heck, I won't laugh...that sounds delicious! Also gingerbread Yum! I bet we will find tons of uses for it!

What do you do with the left over ginger? Do you just add it to the next batch or chuck it?

Hey fellow permies, when you make ginger ale...what do you do with the left over ginger? Do you just add it to the next batch or chuck it?

Hey all!

We had a big harvest of turmeric which we cut and laid out to shade dry. While it was drying a few of the pieces started going black. I'm not sure if it is black mold or something harmless...do you think I have to throw the whole batch away or can I pick out the black ones?

Thanks!

Thanks everyone for all the great information! We have lots of frogs, bats, and birds in Himachal, so I have high hopes that mosquitoes won't be an issue (they are in our cow troughs, but the frogs don't get in there and it is hardly a healthy ecosystem)! I will try without fish and see what happens.

Thank you again!

Hmm and we will have a huge problem with mosquitoes. Do frogs eat their larvae too?

Hey! Great We already get frogs in that spot in monsoons, so it shouldn't be an issue. Thanks!

Hey all! We are turning our low spot (which is a pond anyway in monsoon season) into a year-round pond and I was wondering if it is possible to create a balanced system without adding in fish? We will be planting lotus and some other water plants for eating. Can we use cow manure as fertilizer if needed for the plants?

Thanks!

Thanks Charli! Small scale is perfect for us, especially to start. I will definitely be checking out this book!

Hey y'all! I know there are lots of books recommended in this forum, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a book which prioritizes letting chickens be "chickeny". I am going to be keeping chickens for eggs only, and the eggs will go to our weakest/sickest rescue dogs. It is really important for me that the chickens have a life where they can be healthy and THRIVE while helping our rescue work and farm!

Thank you!
