Cabin was set yesterday and is almost chinked.
Think this was a good decision.

Right after my last post I broke down and ordered a 40x60 Q hut kit. Almost 20’ center height. 18ga steel. I’m back in Wyoming now but my place in Alabama hasn’t sold so funds are tighter than I’d like. Also getting help out here for the things I can’t do myself is troublesome.
Since my concern right now is a place to live if and when Alabama property sells I am buy a prebuilt small log cabin that I can set up now and use as a temp house and then move to the river side and use as a guest house later.
Taking a risk on the Q hut as far as delivery goes but to pay the $25000 balance for a structure to sit on the ground over winter till I can get concrete poured and help erecting seems more foolish. I have 10 months by the terms of the contract to take delivery and the salesman said they would store it for a fee after that. Guess we’re going to see how all that works out but contractors here are telling me next summer minimum if I contract with them now.
In the meantime guess I’m going to be playing Grizzly Adam’s in a dry cabin while I try to get utilities and a well set up. Or I can pull water off the irrigation canal?
At least I’m moving forward!

Also note, the bung type, the lid is crimped on, so you can just grind the center of the crimp, and then nock off with a 2# hammer. The   metal will change color just as you grind through (not very thick)   I am not talking cutting, which can leave a sharp edge. as well as the crimped edge in tack.

I’d use caution if you decide to use a grinder on a drum. Sparks are bad. Seen an empty barrel of windshield washer fluid blow the top off when someone started to take the top off. Know what was in the barrel. Just saying.

The project I was wanting to do was a portable building to live in as a temporary dwelling. That never happened so it’s a non issue now.
The insurance company only cares if they have to pay a claim, I promise they will take your money every month.
I personally have had the inspection process cost me when I built everything to code. I put drains in my pad for the red iron building on my property for a future bathroom. Since I did that I had to have a septic system installed before the inspector would sign off for power to be hooked up. Was a pile of money for a system that didn’t even have a sink connected to it for over 10 years.  I have also seen building depts that were flat out corrupt. The town where I live now used to be the city building inspectors were also contractors. 1 inspector in particular would go out of his way to be a pain on jobs he wasn’t working.
2 sides to every coin. I freely admit that I have issues with people that are doing things “for my own good”.

I’m 64 and not looking. I’m pretty content with my own company mainly because I’m the only one that will put up with me! Even I am too much for myself at times. In the spirit of being different I’ll post a pick.
If someone is brave enough to steal it and use the good on them.

Looks like you’ve got a lot of interest and I wish you well in your search. I just couldn’t help dropping a note on your post. I gave up a long time ago and have found being sort of alone helps cultivate my hermit image! My life companion is named Rose also. She’s a German Pit Retriever that’s a hot mess too! But she’s the sweetest thing. To me. She  seems to hate everyone else.

Fairly recently I read an article about 2 brothers in the Netherlands (?) that were trying to develop a way to grow morels commercially. It’s seems that morels are very picky about their environment and are very difficult to grow reliably/commercially. I think whoever cracks that code will find big profits at the end. I’ll see if I can find the article.

Just to throw another monkey wrench into the works. I had 2 other companies call about building from a lead generator form I had filled out.
These are both gable iron frame buildings. One company seemed very helpful and willing to work with me and for a regular gable end building 35x60 with 16’ eaves he came back with $35000. This eliminates working 10’ in the air to erect the Quonset but gives me 20’ at one end to build a 2 story apartment. Straight walls are easier to deal with. My plans are not set in concrete yet so I have the flexibility to change my mind. Quonset on top of containers is a cool concept full of unknowns until I start building. Initially I came up with the idea because when I tried to price a red iron building they were out of sight. I was quoted $85000 for the same building I have now, 30x40x14, that I paid $24000 in 2011.
