I'm looking for a dozen 55 gallon steel drums in my area.  Anyone know of a container reclaimer type business in Eastern ID (Idaho Falls area) or Western WY (Jackson WY area)?  Salt Lake is the closest I can find to me:  https://miscmaterials.com/collections/containers/products/55-gallon-steel-drums
Or some sort of other business that I could call directly instead of going through a distributor?
I'm in Driggs, ID, so Salt Lake is closer than Boise.
I'm planning to use these for thermal mass in my attached greenhouse.

I am not familiar with Idaho though I thought I would bump your topic with these folks selling used 55 gallon steel drums:

A dozen is a lot.  Are you building an RMH or just using the barrels as mass?

Hi Alison;
Try asking at a large truck repair shop
Or a tractor repair shop
County road crew will also have a shop.
Any of those should have empty barrels stacked up out back
Chances are they might help you load them just to make them go away!

They will no doubt be oil barrels but that should be easy to rinse out with dawn.

Spray foam people generate a lot barrels so you might to check with the insulation outfits in your area that do spray foam.(these are bung barrels)  Another one in my area is highway department and paint barrels for highway striping.(barrel with removable heads)  So you might try those in your area.

Let me pitch my favorite alternative:water heater tanks!
Generally free and between 40 80 gallons.
The main drawback, they don't stack the way barrels do.

Absolutely true, and many "spray foamers" use different spray products, of which come in a assortment of barrels,  Light ones, heavy ones, bung type as mentioned and some with banded lids.
Note: these with banded lids, if your going for a double stack (2 barrels)  if you reverse the bottom barrel, so the bottom is UP and then put on top barrel so the band is in the middle, they often match up nicely. NO extra work.  (other than cutting out the bottom of the bottom barrel)

My cost here is $5.00 for a heavy one, with or without bands.

Also note, the bung type, the lid is crimped on, so you can just grind the center of the crimp, and then nock off with a 2# hammer. The   metal will change color just as you grind through (not very thick)   I am not talking cutting, which can leave a sharp edge. as well as the crimped edge in tack.

Best of success

I’d use caution if you decide to use a grinder on a drum. Sparks are bad. Seen an empty barrel of windshield washer fluid blow the top off when someone started to take the top off. Know what was in the barrel. Just saying.

I think they should change the spelling to Sandy Eggo. This tiny ad agrees with me.
