This badge bit (BB) is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Textiles.

For this BB, you will weave a seedling protection basket, also called a woven cloche. It is made from natural (plant) materials and offers significant air ventilation, as well as protection from munching critters.

Minimum requirements:
 - Weave a seedling protection basket with all-natural materials
 - The woven structure needs to be fine enough that a golf ball won’t fall through but offers significant sunlight and air ventilation
(goal is to keep chipmunks and squirrels away from seedling plants)
 - The open end of the basket must be at least 9 inches across

To document completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pictures or a video (<2 minutes):
 - Description of the materials and technique
 - Picture of the materials
 - Picture of the basket in progress
 - Your completed seedling protection basket (with a tape measure or seedling inside)

Here is a garden cloche (seedling protection basket) made out of willow.

Here you can see an example from amazon.com

Here's a video on making a woven seedling cloche/basket. You'll notice, though, that the gaps are too big to qualify for this BB, but it gives an idea of a technique you could start with:

The deer keep clomping through my son's garden and keep uprooting his chives. I decided it was time to make a protection basket. I left the bottom open so that he can reach his hands in and pick the chives. But, now, the deer can't step on his chives, and it'll probably keep the ducks from poking their bills in there too much, as well.

The chive area. I just had to replant all of these chives because they were uprooted by the deer's hooves

Now the top is woven with small gaps, so hooves can't go through, but there's room at the bottom for my sons' hands to reach in and grab chives

In case it matters, the opening of the woven area is 12 inches in diameter (more than 9 inches)
