This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEM curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Building.

Wood can be expensive.  Pallets are often thrown away and can be found around industrial or commercial sites.  Let's upcycle those pallets into something more useful!

Pallet Safety!  Most pallets I see are safe to reuse but not all pallets are good candidates for projects.
 - If they're splintered to bits they may not have much practical use.
 - Pallets in the US (and likely most of the world) need to be treated to prevent pest insects from traveling in them.  HT (heat treated) pallets are cooked to kill bugs. MB (methyl bromide treated) are not safe.
 - Painted pallets also aren't safe

Here's a fellow showing a couple ways to disassemble pallets (he doesn't seem to mind painted pallets):

Minimum requirements:
  - Salvage 25 square feet of pallet boards
  - Heat treated pallets only
  - Nails removed (cut nails punched out)
  - Solid enough for use on construction projects

Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 min):
  - The pallets
  - Demolition underway with the tools you're using
  - Salvaged wood showing it is at least 25 square feet and nail free

Note to self: don't get into a fist fight with a cactus. Command this tiny ad to do it:
