Typo on the kickstarter page about this new mini- documentary:

Access to a first class micro documentary about full scale hugelkultur gardening/farming. Topics covered will include: How to shape your landscape to be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer; encouragind diversity inside the hugelkultur as well as outside; organic vs. permaculture. This video will be made available to all supporters of this kickstarter.

The mini-documentary is a GREAT idea. Somebody other than me (!) posted your dailyish email describing it to the entire Madison Area Permaculture Guild email list serve. I posted something about the Kickstarter early on, but Math has more social capital in that group. I was very glad to see him promoting it.

That's exactly the sort of response you hope for--I hope it inspires a raft of small and large contributions!

Paul - and others. I would be interested in seeing some seed packs that serve certain purposes. I know there are heaps of seed packs but that is the problem - I want one pack with many species / varieties but that suit a certain purpose. For example seeds of plants that suit shade sides of hugels - sun sides,

Plants that grow well in guilds - one seed pack please. See i do not know how to lay my hands on various nitrogen fixers - differnt veges etc ... I usually just plant a bed from a packet and end up with too many of the one thing and the bugs get in and have a picnic. i figure that someone smart can put together the seeds that suit say early food forest establishment - there are many iterations.

Would it make a kick-starter? Or just advertise it as a product - if you get orders - do it.

Maybe this post should be elsewhere - if so mods please move it.

here is a news article about the kickstarter website being hacked:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-57618976-83/kickstarter-hacked-user-data-stolen/

is there any way to know if this effects your project?

I didn't do a very good job of asking my question on the kick starter site. Since I am backing the project at a higher level than the new $95 Reward level does this mean that I will also get two decks of permaculture playing cards plus everything else in my reward level? I don't want to assume anything.

Nope.

The higher reward levels have been carefully priced for what is listed. Adding decks of cards has other problems - like shipping outside the US.

Some things can be added easily - like adding your name to the micro documentary. But the cards have a pretty hefty expense per deck, plus they add to shipping costs quickly.

Somewhat tongue in cheek and not to have your head explode at little questions on packages with so much swag for something that will do so much good. What about "charmers of nature keen on world domination" instead of" paid to put name here" for $250 Care Package? I really do aspire to charm nature and AM working diligently on the world domination cause, but yes yes, I know that, a video mention is just getting a gold star on the wall for it. Onwards the quest, the rabble swell daily.

Once somebody has purchased a reward you cannot edit it.

Plus, I like the idea that there is an upgrade of getting name recognition.

By "nope" I mean to say - that this stuff does not impact my project. I have a rich backgroun in IT security. The data that the bad guys got won't do them much good.

As to upgrade, you did answer the question now that I purchased and 2 others it cannot be changed. Just the $200 package gets that title and mine is a $250 package. Yes the Care Package gets more swag so I shall be quiet AND happy with my package. Shall tell others there is a $200 package that has a reward suitable for framing and adding to one's CV. Cheers

People - look how close we are to that $40,000 stretch goal:

if we raise $40,000

Bart has some ideas for extra super fancy animations to add. You can see me point at some soil and TREES LEAP OUT OF THE GROUND! Zowie! So this will be BETTER than the actual workshop!

Momentum has slowed, but we can make it. I just tripled my pledge to get us there - let's not stop this close! Pledge if you haven't done so, increase your pledge if you have, send it to friends and neighbors. Let's hit $40K!

Paul

I love the additions to kickstarter and I am just about to join in.... My question is at the 95 dollar level is there anyway we can get a download of the videos instead of the plastic discs??? Just a question. And second I sent a message earlier about the thumb drive but wonder if a 95 dollar kickstarter contribution would help more with your quest to save the world "one brick at a time".

Can you tell us how the streaming will be handled? That is will it be a protected vimeo, Amazon video on demand, streamed from a server farm located in an extinct volcano with good submarine access?

No downloads are currently offered.

Are you talking about the little jump drive that looks like a jar?

Those little jump drives are really expensive. So I'll be lucky to break even. The $95 thing includes the cards and the new 3-DVD set. The cost of raw materials on those is cheaper than one jump drive. Of course, part of the kickstarter is to cover the cost of making the DVDs exist.

But even more: if we have a kickstarter that earns more than $100,000 - I think that sends a powerful message to people perusing kickstarter, plus to permies everywhere. And THAT is an important message. So I would rather beef up the kickstarter total than sell more jump drives.

Probably vimeo. Although vimeo leaves a lot to be desired. So there is lots of time between now and then and there is a decent chance i will find something better.

Hey Paul,

Gumroad offers the ability to stream on demand: http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/29/gumroad-now-lets-you-sell-streaming-videos-on-demand/ It could be an option to explore for your Kickstarter streaming pledgers and for future sales (streaming and/or download option).

I'm sure you've heard of Wistia too, but in my experience they are slower than Vimeo.

Gumroad sounds like it has potential.

Does it have an affiliate program?

Gumroad does not have an affiliate program yet so it may not be a good fit.

I also just realized you may consider using Udemy for your online video streaming needs like I do to augment Organic Life Guru stuff like this. I use Udemy to expand my video courses outside of my own website & sphere of influence. I've heard they get approx 2,000,000 visitors a month. They have an affiliate program you can tie into and their own video hosting (which actually works through Amazon S3) is first class and works well across all viewports. They also have a great coupon system including the free option (for delivering free access to people like your Kickstarter pledges). They recently changed their payout split to 100% if you generate the lead but 50% if they do (which in my opinion is a good deal because they are probably bringing a customer to you who is not a permie yet. Read more here: http://support.udemy.com/knowledgebase/articles/159331-udemy-revenue-share-what-can-i-make-teaching-onli If you go with Udemy you will need to chop up your videos into roughly 15 minute HD segments or 2GB max per video segment.

Hi all.

I'm wanting to help support the Empire, love what you do, but I had such a hard time with the sound in the RMH video that I'm reluctant to buy this one. Please, tell me that the sound quality is good?!

Yes, if you look carefully at the Kickstarter video you can even see the microphone that Paul was wearing. This isn't a "camera at the back of the room" video, this was planned from the beginning and Paul is the speaker, not the videographer. You might recall, in the RMH videos, you never had a problem hearing what Paul had to say!

Order with confidence--you will hear every word.

Great work guys, we turned 40K!

Then we get the animations! It's super awesome the fact Geoff will add his opinions.

What are the chances of reaching 50K? I just doubled my input, are anyone with me? Can be break the 50K line?

If we get to $50,000, we will repeat the whole workshop here in Montana with TWO huge excavators - much larger than the one used in the current footage. We will do this about a month from now, right after the voices conference. We will invite kickstarter supporters to come on up and be in it if they want. They will even get a chance to drive the excavators. We will build hugelkultur beds, HUGE berms, BIG ponds and more. Free. All you gotta do is support the kickstarter (at any amount) and get here when the time comes. And that's only if we hit $50,000.

Oh, and I'm on the phone with Geoff Lawton. He says he is going to stop by the original workshop site when we are there getting the "after" footage and give some feedback.

It LOOKS cool, but personally I find it a little bit, how to say this, heavy? It's like you come crushing with something big, perhaps not like an elephant in a china shop, more like, hm, a big ass excavator ripping up mother nature making her your personal bitch - sort of. Could it be a little bit more hippie peace freakish? (<- I can't believe I actually found a suitable place for that term!). Like "Save the world gardening - featuring... etc"

Ummm, "World Domination Gardening" sounds like a Kickstarter from Monsanto. It also isn't very descriptive of the content. How bout "Hey baby, wanna see my excavator?" instead?

I think you are simultaneously getting the point and completely missing the point at the same time.
Have you ever heard Paul speak? Do you get him? Do you empathize with his RAGE? Do you grok his motivation?

Assuming I do, here's what I think:
This stuff is so overwhelmingly serious that it is imperative to have fun. You must must must assume tongues in cheeks, winks, and twinkles, and discomfort, and work. What do you think all the pie is for?

I think it's amusing - made me laugh. And I like the fact that it can appeal to anyone (unless they lack a sense of irony). What I mean is that the ambiguous terms (hugelkultur and permaculture) are moved to the subtitle. Permaculture insiders will know what it's about, and ordinary gardeners might actually be drawn in.
