Over in this thread Paul Wheaton and Andrew Millison are discussing who should be the ten Level 9 people on the Wheaton Eco scale. This has transformed into a desire to find out:

Who are the top 100 people in permaculture?

Who are the people who have done the most to further permaculture and spread word of it? Who are the people who have done the most to transform the world into a better place through the power of permaculture?

Bill Mollison

Ruth Stout

Ruth Imogen Stout (June 14, 1884 – August 22, 1980) was an American author best known for her "No-Work" gardening books and techniques.

As the years progressed, Stout refined her techniques, eventually adopting a year-round mulch which virtually eliminated the labor associated with traditional gardening. Her minimalist approach spawned a long-running series of articles in Organic Gardening and Farming magazine as well as several books.

What about Wangari Maathai?


(April 1940 – 25 September 2011)
From the Wikpedia page on Wangari Maathai:

In 1977, Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement,[2][3] an environmental non-governmental organization focused on the planting of trees, environmental conservation, and women's rights. In 1984, she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award for "converting the Kenyan ecological debate into mass action for reforestation". Maathai was an elected member of the Parliament of Kenya and between January 2003 and November 2005 served as assistant minister for environment and natural resources in the government of President Mwai Kibaki. She was an Honorary Councillor of the World Future Council.


From this NPR article, Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai: A Global Icon Of Conservation:  

When Wangari Maathai celebrated something important — such as becoming the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize — she would plant a tree.

"That's the way I do things," she told NPR's Renee Montagne in 2004. A tree, especially a flaming red Nandi, would be a living memory. And it would bring life to some of the world's barren lands.

Maathai died of cancer Sunday in a Nairobi hospital. She was 71. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her work promoting environmental stewardship, empowering women and peaceful resistance to violence.

I want to add Marc Siepman; in the Netherlands he is well-known as public speaker about different permaculture-related subjects (including social permaculture, together with his wife Caroline). I want to give him one of my apple-votes and the only other vote I have.

Three people from the UK that I think shoukd be included. I've written a little each based on wikipedia and other web links.  I would not be here if it were not for these three people.

Martin Crawford

(Martin Crawford and members of a tour in his Forest Garden in 2018)
Martin Crawford is a British author (eg. Creating a Forest Garden) who is the founder and director of the Agroforestry Research Trust which carries out research into temperate agroforestry, with a focus on tree, shrub and perennial crops. It produces several publications and a quarterly journal, and sells plants and seeds from its forest gardens. His forest garden at Dartington was started in 1994 and is one of the oldest extant in the UK.

Ken Fern
Author of the book 'Plants for a Future' (why don't carrots grow on trees?) and co-founder of the charity PFAF which runs the useful online database of the same name, which Ken originally compiled.  Creator with his wife Addy of 'the Field' a 28 acre research site in Cornwall UK which they purchased in 1989.

Robert Adrian de Jauralde Hart
Author and father of the modern idea of temperate forest gardens, with seven layers mimicking the natural climax of temperate woodlands, and creator of one on 1/8 acre at his home in Shropshire UK.  Although since mostly cleared, his garden was the inspiration for many others in the Western world.

Tony Rinaudo is the inventor of Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration. The method by which in short treestumps get a chance to regrow and provide food shad shelter cool and attract rain. It’s been very succesful all over Africa and has changed the lives of many and saved millions of hectares from desertification.

I would consider Scott and Helen Nearing. They predated the official permaculture movement by a bunch of years, but anyone who has read The Good Life can see many of the principles in practice.

Mark Shepard is the acclaimed author of Restoration Agriculture, a guide to perennial ecosystem agriculture.  He is the CEO of Forest Agriculture Enterprises, and runs New Forest Farm, the 106-acre perennial agricultural forest considered by many to be one of the most ambitious sustainable agriculture projects in the United States. I have thought of about 40 more names that would be excellent for a "top 100" but I don't think they can bump anybody already on the "top 10" list.  

If I understand correctly, Nicole, the idea is to come up with a list of contenders for the top 10 list, right?  Or, is the mission to come up with a top 100 list?

I think Alan Booker is definitely in the top 100 right now.  And will probably be in the top 10 in the next few years.

What if people could have more apple votes?  I'm pretty sure that that is just a configuration.

I like the poor man's poll format so that everybody can add as many votes as they like for the people.  

I wish there was a way so that everybody could get a number of zero to 100.  That way, everybody could say "that person had contributed five times more than the person I gave a '1' to - this other person gets a '5' and THAT person gets '80'"   ---   of course, our system does not have that sort of stuff, so we make do with what we have.

I was also going to nominate her. I appreciate her work and it is very accessible. She has a sliding scale and it allows those with abundance to cover costs for those who may not have financial ability to get involved. I have been on both sides of that slider and it feels very good to be able to give when I can and also participate when I don't have as much money but I am rich with time to learn. It's inspiring and creates a sense of community.

I think Alan Booker is definitely in the top 100 right now.  And will probably be in the top 10 in the next few years.



I was thinking that we could create the list of the top 100, and then from there chose the top 10 based on the votes. I guess I was trying to do both, without really having perfect tools for either.

I can totally increase it to 100. In fact, I just did. I placed it at 10 apples to make it a bit more egalitarian. It seems most permies have at least 10 apples, but there's a lot less who have 100.  But, we can move it to 100. That should help us fill out the top 100, while the top 10 will still have lots of voters

My hope was that people would do what you did, and paste each name down here in their own reply, so that everyone can find them and give them a thumbs up. Would you like me to make posts down here for the rest of the people on the list?
