Hi All,
Scroll down for the list of threads
I started down the
mushroom path because of my interest in soil. Essentially I wanted to make the best, most fertile soil possible. Originally this meant amending existing soil with various organic additives, then evolved into planting beneficial plants (especially legumes). But eventually I wanted to make my soil from scratch, kinda like a form of super-composting. As I have a lot of brush that gets cleared annually, chipping that brush into piles of chips seemed like the right thing to do. But then those piles just sat around, taking years to decay. I wanted a way to turn that pile of chips into something like garden bedding much faster. Initially I was thinking about adding nitrogen to the chips so as to enhance bacterial action but was dissuaded when I learned that mushrooms, especially Wine Caps but also Oysters would do the job better and faster than bacteria. Since about 2018 I have been making my "soil" from
wood chips broken down by Wine Caps and this garden bedding is the most fertile "soil" I have ever seen! I still have plans to enhance it even more but using fungi to break down wood has been an amazing
experience for me.
I thought I would start a list of Wine-Cap mushroom growing threads. I have made several threads over the years but I thought it would
be nice to have all of them in one place. Please bear in mind that while I am making this list and I have had some good success with Wine Caps, I am not an expert, but rather an fortunate and informed amateur. I still make mistakes and I wholly welcome the advice, experience and suggestions of others in this
thread. I am making it to help guide new mushroom growers and pass on a bit of what I have learned. Also, while this is a list about growing mushrooms, it focuses more on those mushrooms that can really break down organic materials quickly. The main purpose here is to rapidly decompose wood, with the actual mushroom being a tasty side-effect. If at some point I get better at growing more culinary mushrooms over the rapidly decomposing mushrooms then I will add that at a future date.

The following links are sort of organized. The very first link on the top of the list is by far the longest thread of the bunch--maybe more than all the rest combined. I particularly keep that one updated so as to share my success, failures and anxieties. If you are new to this thread, I recommend reading that one first.
The list of links are then grouped into three clusters. The first cluster is specific to Wine Caps. The second one relates to other mushrooms, but especially Oyster Mushrooms. The final group pertains to soil as the soil and mushroom
compost sorta merge together. I added in a bunch of links from resident soil expert
Bryant RedHawk.
