Starting new thread, or comment in an old one?

I am curious, from the stand point of the caretakers of this site, if there is already a thread on a subject, do you guys prefer someone comments on it, or is it okay to start a new one? Or better, or does it matter?

In general, we favour perennial discussion.  Resurrecting old threads is encouraged.

Starting a new thread is okay too.

Sometimes staff will merge threads together if they feel the subjects match well.  Sometimes we will split threads if we feel there's something worthy of becoming its own thread or is at risk of getting lost in the bigger thread.

For the most part, the threads here grow organically with the staff acting like gardeners to prune and shape the threads if needed.

Just to give a perspective of someone not involved with running the site but a user.

I like the resurrecting of old threads, you end up getting info you might have missed because they were buried in long silent threads you missed.

However sometimes if a thread has gotten too long, I would sort of prefer a new one over continuing the old one. The length of one thread page is pretty large, so 10 pages of a thread is a lot of posts to wade through. So I would personally cap old threads at 10 pages and start a new one after that. But with a link to the older thread so it can still be easily accessed and referenced.

Just my 2 cents on the subject.

I get a notification if somebody replies to a thread that i participated in several years ago.   And when I read the old posts, they mean something different now than they did then.  Because I've learned a lot of other stuff.  A lot of things that didn't make sense ten years ago, make sense now!
