Ive found some great prairie grasses from the USA that have super deep roots (switchgrass, little blue grass, easter gamagrass for riparian zones etc) that really help infiltrate rain water into the soil. Does anyone from the Iberian peninsular (or even southern Europe) know of any similar grasses that I can use here in Portugal?
Lucerne is pretty much a universal deep rooting grass found over most of the world. (in the USA it is called alfalfa)
Switch grasses are also really good for their deep root traits.
Just remember that these grasses might not sink their roots really deep the first year, especially if the soil is compacted.
