Any other permies in North Central Idaho?

I moved to Idaho a few years ago and was wondering if any other permies were in the area might want to meet up. I have 7 acres that are in the very early stages of a homestead/food forest/hunter's playground and would be willing to show off what I'm doing if anyone is interested.  I'm mostly trying to find some like minded individuals who share the same passion. So if you're interested let me know. I'm near Orofino in the beautiful Clearwater valley. Mainly looking for people around there or in Lewiston, Moscow, Pullman, Grangeville, Kooskia, and surrounding areas.

Hi Travis, I have been looking for people in the Orofino area! Not that I live there now, but I lived there on and off from 1985-1990, went to Orofino High School for a bit, worked for the Clearwater County extension office and gave tours at Dworshak Dam. I was also involved in 4-H. I still have friends there, including my mentor who is a bit "famous" in those parts and now 85 years old, lived off grid and off the land for many years and she and her husband eventually built everything on their property (once had over 1000 acres). I have gone back a couple times in the last few years and it reminded me of just how wonderful that area is.

Anyway, I am seriously considering buying property up there and going back. What area are you in? How did you decided to move there? I'm curious if we may know some of the same people..

Hi Kail. I'm about 20 mins from Orofino close to Greer. Before moving out here I had wanted to buy a property for a long time and I did a ton of research based on climate, population, ecology, etc. to figure out where I wanted to live. I wanted to be somewhere in the Rockies because the east and west coasts I think have too many people and I wanted to be pretty far from large cities. This area also has huge wilderness areas that I can escape to so I can hike, backpack etc. Then I found out that this area of north central idaho was the warmest and wettest region across the whole intermountain west which would be very good for allowing me a wider range of plants I could choose to plant. And then there is the fact that there are very healthy populations of deer, elk, turkey, bear, etc. I'd like to be able to get most of my meat from hunting one day so that was pretty important to me. The longer I've been here the more I realize how amazing this area really is. Another awesome thing about this area is all the feral fruit trees that have been spread by wildlife from old orchards and grow wild. There are some areas where it is literally a wildlife planted feral food forest. Pretty amazing to me how something like that can happen. I'm very happy with my choice. This area is perfect for my needs.

Hey Travis, thanks for your reply. My friend lives in between Orofino and Greer, on the South-West side of the river a couple miles past the golf course, it's one of my favorite areas. She has a gorgeous orchard with 25+ mature fruit trees falling down with fruit, nice to hear they are spreading. I am currently looking for property anywhere around the Moscow-Lewiston-Orofino-Kamiah-Dreary areas and I am shocked at the lack of land/homes for sale now, and the prices! When I lived there in the mid-1980s my grandmother bought 2 homes on a lot in town for around $20k. Now a small house on a small acreage is around what we could sell our small home here in the Bay Area for, or more!

Have you been to the Orofino farmers markets?

Hey Kali yeah that's cool about your friend. I drive by them every day for work. I think I know exactly where you're talking about. But yeah I've noticed prices have gone up a lot even since I got my property. I actually got a great deal on mine and when I saw it listed I knew I had to jump on it. I'm glad I did, it was the best investment I've ever made.

Travis, I'm always interested in meeting with folks in the area and sharing experiences.  It's great to have someone you can bounce ideas off of and brainstorm solutions to our unique problems that we run into in this neck of the woods!  Let me know what you come up with-Dave

What kind of setups are you guys working with? I have about seven acres of overgrown pasture that I've been planting fruit and nut trees in and I'm trying to come up with some unique ways to grow vegetables, wild edibles, etc. I'm thinking I might try hugelkulture at some point. Oh and I'm in the process of putting in a pond.
