Slightly off-topic: I have two friends who have bought and learned to use well, modern cross-bows. At dusk, they use these nifty bolts that have LED lights that blink after take-off, improving the odds of finding the animal.

With the human density going up, they find the quietness and the shorter range to be an asset. They have very successfully hunted deer with this equipment.

Another neighbor uses special low intensity??? (sorry, can't remember the name) ammo, if he's shooting vermin such as racoon. Again, he doesn't want the shot to go too far, or make as much noise. He has used this to humanely dispatch coons in live traps.  It works in his usual gun. (please avoid  drowning animals, as it is considered one of the most cruel ways to die)
