I haven't read John's link yet, but this reminded me of a book I read years ago: The new wild : why invasive species will be nature's salvation by Fred Pearce  He makes a strong case for invasive plants invading because the ecosystem is out of balance due to human activity (eg Purple Loosestrife in wetlands because there's too much nitrogen run-off from artificial fertilizer or poor septic fields.) I know that I've read more recently that in a saltwater shore system, an "invasive" plant was actually helping a group of native plants re-establish following human damage.
