I've seen many "solar" ideas on many different web sites including this one.
This is a unique idea for PASSIVE REFRIGERATION - without electricity - just using the sun to dehydrate water-soaked material between two containers.

It's interesting, but not really practical except in specific conditions. When they talk about getting the food temp down to 43F, it can't be done unless the temp outside is 65F or below and very dry. There is a chart of temperatures and the humidity needed to get these temps on the Rebuilding Civilization website. It's an interesting idea, and works well in evaporative (swamp) coolers in dry climates, but you probably won't want to throw your refrigerator away just yet.

We had a large window-sized Swamp Cooler when living in Texas and it worked very well there. I liked that better that just an AC unit because you got moisture along with the cool air. Very nice at night for sleeping.
