This is a cautionary message . We took in a new kitten .... a foundling. We always take precautions with foundlings and isolate them..... except this time we didn't. Now another cat and my wife have eye infections that look very much like what the foundling has. It is nothing too serious .. but we did get sloppy.

New cats invariably are.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I have loved both cats that have adopted me, and every neighbourhood one that became a friend; I buried a neighbourhood stray that died in my backyard in the backyard pet cemetery where my golden retriever and personal cats, turtle, and chihuahua all ended up. My mom and I once risked incurring put-down fees for a stray we found dying in our laneway with a necrotic fetus slowly killing her (sorry, not a fun time).

All cats as can be should be loved. That said, my aunt is the crazy cat lady of her neighbourhood, not because she keeps them herself, but because she feeds dozens of them, and at least one family of skunks, from her backyard. They just keep eating and breeding. So many places could benefit from a spay/neuter and release program.

And sorry about the eye infection. That sucks. I am allergic now, except to two or three specific breeds to which I am only allergenically sensitive, so I could never get that close, but all you ever want to do with new kittens is cuddle them to your face. And *bam*, pinkeye. It's like getting impeteibo (sp.?, bacterial skin infection) from a baby's drool.

That's too bad, John. I hope the problems can be addressed.

If it makes you feel any better, one time when my kids were very small we all of us got pinkeye. Including the new puppy. Not sure if we got it from the puppy or the daycare, but we all did. And all ended up using the same ointment. Holding down toddlers and puppies to put in ointment was equally impossible, I'm surprised we ever got over it.

We would have treated the kitten no matter what. My wife and I are kicking ourselves for getting so sloppy. It never ever occurred to us to isolate .....something we have always automatically done.

For what is is worth, the kitten is great. The older cat appears to be ok, but there will probably be a follow up vet trip. My wife still has an infected eye ...it is getting better.

The older kitty went to the vet today. She has a fever of 103. So, she is on a new round of antibiotics. On leaving, I left my appointment calendar on top of the car. Yes. I spent a half hour chasing the pages from it down the highway. I think I got them all.

Is this Master Mouser that's sick? I hope she gets well soon. I hope your wife is doing well too of course!

I've always had feral or stray kitties and they do sometimes come with extra diseases to be treated. And it takes the right antibiotic to do the trick, and unfortunately it isn't always the first one. One of our ferals had eye infections when we got her (along with a load of parasites) and it took a while to get all her issues cleared up. She lived to 17 years. She was "commando kitty" because she would move around the room, running from behind one piece of furniture to another if there was a new person around.

Hi Robin,

Yes it is the MM. I have well over $100 into her now for this round of illiness. There will be at least one more visit. While her temp is 103 (it had been 104), the vet tells me the norm for a cat is 101.

I commented before about the MM bringing evidence of her work to a human for credit. Well, my wife woke up at 3:00 AM with a dead mouse beside her. It was sort of like that scene from the Godfather. It was exciting! I never thought a 66 year old woman with 5 fused vertebrae could move so fast! It was a joy to see her acting so healthy. When I got up this morning she was sleeping on the sofa. Gee, I sure hope she didn't hurt the MM's feelings.

OMG that's funny! Thank you for the laugh this early in the day.

At least MM didn't just leave the head. THAT would be nasty. Our two ex-feral cats would leave bunny guts for us along with a paw or ear to help us identify their gift. They knew we were challenged in the animal gut identification area.

Once they left a whole, dead rat. A big one. That was impressive.
