Gaia's Garden by Toby Hemenway is the best.
If you have that already, then "Mini-Farming" by Brett L. Markham is nice. The end kinda leaves you hanging when he doesn't let you in on any huge secret of how to
sell, but it covers the basics well.
As for hand tools, a
gardening hook-knife, a sickle, or a sythe. Or a double pronged pick hoe. I use those plus a shovel and 2 forks (
hay, digging) and that seems to be all I need. A rake once in a while. Trowel, Pruning sissors and regular sissors. That's my whole inventory. Everything else requires
gasoline or other people's machinery.
best of luck,
W
