I was wondering if anyone had any great ideas, for a miracle hand tool of some kind?? or a great book,.. anything really that would be special and be something he could really use...

sorry if i have posted in wrong spot...not a real forumy person yet..

Gaia's Garden by Toby Hemenway is the best.
If you have that already, then "Mini-Farming" by Brett L. Markham is nice. The end kinda leaves you hanging when he doesn't let you in on any huge secret of how to sell, but it covers the basics well.

As for hand tools, a gardening hook-knife, a sickle, or a sythe. Or a double pronged pick hoe. I use those plus a shovel and 2 forks (hay, digging) and that seems to be all I need. A rake once in a while. Trowel, Pruning sissors and regular sissors. That's my whole inventory. Everything else requires gasoline or other people's machinery.

If you want to get him a scythe, they sell lovely light ones in Portugal, so wait til you get here.

As for a digging fork, buy him a nice, quality stainless steel one *before* you get here. They are rarer than hen's teeth!

I second Gaia's Garden, too.
