Too many Autumn Olives = UTI?

Hi folks,

I've searched the internet for evidence that I'm not the only one who has had this experience, but to no avail...

It seems that when I eat a lot of autumn olives--perhaps go overboard, which is easy for me as I love them--the result is symptoms just like a urinary tract infection. A strong, painfully burning urge to pee, especially right after peeing, and painful burning upon peeing. Taking my goldenrod tincture (which is what cures most typical UTIs for me) helps a bit, but not entirely.

I'm pretty convinced the autumn olives are the culprit because the severity of the pain seems directly correlated to how many of them I've recently eaten. When I canned the last of the first harvest and stopped eating them, the "UTI" promptly went away. After a week I harvested more, and was doing fine in keeping myself from eating too many at once, until I went overboard again last night... I gorged myself on the astringent berries until my throat was so dry I could barely talk. This morning, I woke up with the bad burning again.

My best guess at why this could be, is maybe I've eaten so many that they're making my very urine astringent, causing pain in the sensitive tissue of my bladder and urinary tract. Does this make sense? Does anyone else have a theory?

Has anyone else had this experience??

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and input!!

Elise, I've moved your thread to this forum as, although the olives clearly aren't 'medicine', there might be someone here that has more knowledge.

Welcome to the forum, Bridget.

While I have no knowledge of this it seems to me that since autumn olives are high in carbohydrates, the sugar could very well cause a UTI if consumed in large quantities.

I'm not sure about autumn olives, but I have been reading about chokeberries recently and apparently they have been found to be effective against UTIs, so if you have any Aronia melanocarpa growing you could try those to relieve symptoms.

Not sure if this helps but I know they have a LOT of Lycopene. IDK if that has anything to do with it.
