Greetings Permies,

I've a project coming up very quickly to help a good friend (farmer) realize her desire to heat her new high tunnel with a rocket mass heater. I'm a bit stymied regarding the design and particulars (I've some understanding of the basic principles, need guidance on the specifics.)

Locations: Hardiness Zone 8A (10F to 15F) in Georgia very near a large forest.

Size: 30' x 48' x 14' (~21,000 cu ft)

Single Layer 6 mil greenhouse poly covering

At least 1 vent fan over one of the doors

We want to put the mass heater in and make if functional as a seed warmer in the colder period of time leading to spring planting (thinking a bench of some sort that runs the full length or part of the length of the tunnel.

The mass heater is intended to be located the north side of the tunnel.

I'm interested in knowing how to design an appropriately sized burn chamber, best location for clean outs, and how far/distance of the chimney through the mass bench to be most effective before exiting under the tunnel and then vented out.

I deeply appreciate the collective knowledge and experience for this request.

Respectfully,

CJ

CJ welcome to Permies.

Check out this thread: Green house rocket stove thread

Sounds like the same sort of application that Eric has. You can PM me if you want more background, though I only check in a couple of times a week. Eric is too busy with his business at the moment. Be patient and you can get help. Eric also posted a couple of videos to youtube so you can search his name there as well to see it in action.
