I was interested in the comments about ladybugs overwintering in part of the "hotel".
Many years ago we moved into a new home. The old garden was in pretty bad shape and there was a wildflower grouping that was completely covered with aphids. I didn't have time to work on the garden that year but by fall I could see that the ladybugs were moving in. Later in the winter I noticed that a north facing wall of the outside of the house was covered with these little bug cocoons.I had no idea what they were. Come spring I watched to see what they were and soon I had hundreds of baby lady bugs headed out to the old garden. The aphids didn't stand a chance. I just thought it was wild that they were just attached to a wall without any sort of protection and seemed to do just fine! I kick myself to this day for not taking a picture of that.
