Everything we care about—
our mental and physical well-being,
our relationships, our ability to benefit others and the world,
the deepening of our spiritual life—
all depend on the power of love and compassion operative in us.
The strength of that power, in turn,
depends on how well we are able to access the qualities,
attitudes, and energies of love and compassion;
how deeply we can be healed, replenished,
and transformed by them.
Then we can extend that same loving power
to others more sustainably and unconditionally
in our attention and action.
Love and compassion take us beyond ourselves,
so we are less caught up in our own worries,
more fully present to others,
more in touch with our better selves
and our purpose for living,
and therefore naturally happier.

many things become too late...
It will be too late to save

But it is not too late to love,

Love will count,

The rooting (of trees, of our selves)
is as important and as necessary as the rising.
We have the opportunity to sink roots into soul
and rise up with branches in heaven.
Our spiritual growth is meant to go in both directions,
toward the fertile darkness
and the glorious light,
each of us having the opportunity
to bridge earth and heaven—
the underworld and the upperworld—
through the trunks of our middleworld lives.
There's no conflict between spirit-centered being
and soulful doing,
between transcendence and inscendence.
Each supports and enhances the other.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

isn’t it awesome that we have

can be transformative.

The Moment

The moment when, after many years
of hard work and a long voyage
you stand in the centre of your room,
house, half-acre, square mile, island, country,
knowing at last how you got there,
and say, I own this,

is the same moment when the trees unloose
their soft arms from around you,
the birds take back their language,
the cliffs fissure and collapse,
the air moves back from you like a wave
and you can’t breathe.

No, they whisper. You own nothing.
You were a visitor, time after time
climbing the hill, planting the flag, proclaiming.
We never belonged to you.
You never found us.
It was always the other way round.

birds who are the secrets of living
whatever they sing is better than to know
and if men should not hear them men are old

may my mind stroll about hungry
and fearless and thirsty and supple

and may myself do nothing usefully
and love yourself so more than truly

Another way of dealing with
the challenges and imperfections of life
is to turn toward our experience
with warmth and kindness.
We can intentionally cultivate
a stance of compassionate understanding
toward our struggles,
so that we feel moved to help in some way.
Even when things aren't going
as we would like them to,
we can be accompanied
by our own caring and goodwill.
We can find solace in the warmth
of our own hearts
so that the sweetness of our love
holds the bitterness of pain
and makes it more bearable.

My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird — equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young and still not half-perfect?
Let me keep my mind on what matters, which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished.
The phoebe, the delphinium.
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all ingredients are here,

which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart and these body-clothes, a mouth with which to give shouts of joy to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,
telling them all, over and over, how it is that we live forever.

Oftentimes, things are not in their right place—
something feels disconcerting or agitating
because we're honing in on a small bit of the picture.
But when we can keep stepping back
and reminding ourselves of the possibilities of equanimity,
that's when the heart settles.
We can let people and circumstances be what they are,
we can let the world be what it is.
When we're not comparing, pushing, manipulating,
or trying to get it to be a certain way,
we're a lot more accepting,
and just reminding ourselves of this simple perspective
gives us an opportunity for clear seeing.

I worried a lot.
Will the garden grow,
will the rivers flow in the right direction,
will the earth turn as it was taught,
and if not, how shall I correct it?
Was I right, was I wrong,
will I be forgiven, can I do better?
Will I ever be able to sing,
even the sparrows can do it and I am, well, hopeless.
Is my eyesight fading or am I just imagining it,
am I going to get rheumatism, lockjaw, dementia?
Finally I saw that worrying had come to nothing.
And gave it up.
And took my old body
and went out into the morning, and sang.

The singular and cheerful life
of any flower
in anyone’s garden
or any still unowned field-

if there are any-
catches me
by the heart,
by its color

by its obedience
to the holiest of laws:
be alive
until you are not…

those princes of everything green-
the grasses
of which there are truly
an uncountable company,

each on its singular stem
striving
to rise and ripen.

What, in the earth world,
is there not to be amazed by
and to be steadied by
and to cherish?

Oh, my dear heart,
my own dear heart,
full of hesitations,
questions, choice of directions,

look at the world.
Behold the morning glory,
the meanest flower, the ragweed, the thistle.
Look at the grass.

The problem in middle life,
when the body has reached its climax of power
and begins to decline,
is to identify yourself, not with the body,
which is falling away,
but with the consciousness of which it is a vehicle.

This is something I learned from myths.
What am I?
Am I the bulb that carries the light?
Or am I the light of which the bulb is a vehicle?

One of the psychological problems in growing old
is the fear of death.
People resist the door of death.

But this body is a vehicle of consciousness,
and if you can identify with the consciousness,
you can watch this body go like an old car.
There goes the fender, there goes the tire,
one thing after another— but it’s predictable.
And then, gradually, the whole thing drops off,
and consciousness, rejoins consciousness.
It is no longer in this particular environment.
