Simplicity, patience, compassion.
These three are your greatest treasures.
Simple in actions and thoughts, you return to the source of being.
Patient with both friends and enemies,
you accord with the way things are.
Compassionate toward yourself,
you reconcile all beings in the world.

We must go beyond the arrogance of human rights.
We must go beyond the ignorance of civil rights.
We must step into the reality of natural rights
because all of the natural world
has a right to existence
and we are only a small part of it.

People do meditation to find psychic alignment.
That's why people do psychotherapy and analysis.
That's why people analyze their dreams and make art.
That is why some contemplate tarot cards, cast I Ching, dance, drum,
make theater, pry out the poem, and fire up their prayers.
That's why we do all the things we do.
It is the work of gathering all the bones together.
Then we must sit at the fire
and think about which song
we will use to sing over the bones,
which creation hymn, which re-creation hymn.
And the truths we tell will make the song.

Natural warmth is our shared capacity to love,
to have empathy,
to have a sense of humor.
It is also our capacity to feel gratitude
and appreciation and tenderness.
It’s the whole gamut
of what often are called the heart qualities,
qualities that are a natural part of being human.
Natural warmth has the power
to heal all relationships—
the relationship with ourselves
as well as with people, animals,
and all that we encounter every day of our lives.

Invite the Sacred to participate
in your joy in little things,
as well as in your agony over the great ones.
There are as many miracles to be seen
through a microscope as through a telescope.
Start with the little things
seen through a magnifying glass of wonder,
and just as a magnifying glass
can focus the sunlight into a burning beam
that can set a leaf aflame,
so can your focused wonder
set you ablaze with insight.
Find the light in each other
and just fan it.

Spiritual ecology is, at its core, achingly simple.
It is the recognition of the universal spirit
that imbues all living things—
a recognition that must be embodied
through conscious spiritual engagement with the Earth.
It is not about learning something new

HIDING
is a way of staying alive.
Hiding is a way of holding ourselves until we are ready to come into the light.
Even hiding the truth from ourselves can be a way to come to what we need in our own necessary time.
Hiding is one of the brilliant and virtuoso practices of almost every part of the natural world: the protective quiet of an icy northern landscape, the held bud of a future summer rose,
the snow bound internal pulse of the hibernating bear.
Hiding is underestimated.
We are hidden by life in our mother’s womb until we grow and ready ourselves for our first appearance in the lighted world;
to appear too early in that world is to find ourselves with the immediate necessity for outside intensive care.

Hiding done properly is the internal faithful promise for a proper future emergence,
as embryos, as children or even as emerging adults in retreat from the names that have caught us and imprisoned us, often in ways where we have been too easily seen and too easily named.

We live in a time of the dissected soul, the immediate disclosure; our thoughts, imaginings and longings exposed to the light too much, too early and too often, our best qualities squeezed too soon into a world already awash with too easily articulated ideas that oppress our sense of self and our sense of others.
What is real is almost always to begin with, hidden, and does not want to be understood by the part of our mind that mistakenly thinks it knows what is happening.
What is precious inside us does not care to be known by the mind in ways that diminish its presence.

Hiding is an act of freedom from the misunderstanding of others, especially in the enclosing world of oppressive secret government and private entities, attempting to name us,
to anticipate us, to leave us with no place to hide and grow in ways unmanaged by a creeping necessity for absolute naming, absolute tracking and absolute control.
Hiding is a bid for independence, from others, from mistaken ideas we have about our selves, from an oppressive and mistaken wish to keep us completely safe, completely ministered to, and therefore completely managed.

Hiding is creative, necessary and beautifully subversive of outside interference and control. Hiding leaves life to itself, to become more of itself.
Hiding is the radical independence necessary for our emergence into the light of a proper human future.

the privilege of having been seen by someone,

Sadly, because our culture has devalued the feminine,
we have repressed so much of her nature,
so many of her qualities.
Instead we live primarily masculine values;
we are goal-oriented, competitive, driven.
Masculine values even dominate our spiritual quest;
we seek to be better, to improve ourselves,
to get somewhere.
We have forgotten the feminine qualities
of waiting, listening, being empty.
We have dismissed the deep need
of the soul, our longing,
the feminine side of love.

You do not need to chant all night in a temple in the Himalayas.
You don't have to be the newest incarnation of Mary Magdalene.
It is not necessary to read or write spiritual books.
You are not required to know the difference
between Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism
or memorize the Beatitudes.
All you have to do to walk the path of the ordinary mystic
is to cultivate a gaze of wonder and step onto the road.
Keep walking. Rest up, and walk again.
Fall down, get up, walk on.
Pay attention to the landscape.
To the ways it changes and the ways it stays the same.
Be alert to surprises and turn with the turning of the seasons.
Honor your body, train your mind,
and keep your heart open against all odds.
Say yes to what is, even when it is uncomfortable
or embarrassing or heartbreaking.
Hurl your handful of yes into the treetops
and then lift your face as the rain of yes drops its grace
all over you, all around you, and settles deep inside you.

Joanna Macy writes that until we can grieve for our planet we cannot love it
—grieving is a sign of spiritual health.
But it is not enough to weep for our lost landscapes;
we have to put our hands in the earth to make ourselves whole again.
Even a wounded world is feeding us.
Even a wounded world holds us,
giving us moments of wonder and joy.
I choose joy over despair.

I would not ordinarily undertake a discussion of form in art,
nor would I undertake a discussion of content.
To me, they are inseparable.
Form is formulation-the turning of content into a material entity,
rendering a content accessible to others, giving it permanence,
willing it to the race.
Form is as varied as are the accidental meetings of nature.
Form in art is as varied as idea itself.
It is the visible shape of all man's growth;
it is the living picture of his tribe at its most primitive,
and of his civilization at its most sophisticated state.
Form is the many faces of the legend-
bardic, epic, sculptural, musical, pictorial, architectural;
it is the infinite images of religion;
it is the expression and the remnant of self.
Form is the very shape of content.

winter solstice wishes

May you grow still enough
to hear the small noises earth makes
in preparing for the long sleep of winter,
so that you yourself may grow calm
and grounded deep within.
May you grow still enough
to hear the trickling of water
seeping into the ground,
so that your soul may be softened and healed,
and guided in its flow.
May you grow still enough
to hear the splintering of starlight in the winter sky
and the roar at earth's fiery core.
May you grow still enough
to hear the stir of a single snowflake in the air,
so that your inner silence
may turn into hushed expectation.

While expressing gratitude seems innocent enough,
it is a revolutionary idea.
In a consumer society, contentment is a radical proposition.
Recognizing abundance rather than scarcity undermines an economy
that thrives by creating unmet desires.
Gratitude cultivates an ethic of fullness, but the economy needs emptiness.

May we all awaken
to the unconditional embrace
of the Whole Universe.
May we have the courage
to embody the clarity
of a Childlike Faith
that is empty of all fear.
May we come to cherish
the wonder of simple humanness,
the healing of forgiveness and self-compassion,
and the power of Being and accepting each moment,
just as it is.
May we all rest with humility,
confidence and trust
in the core wisdom
of our Awakened Spirit Self in the Now
that exists before our individual personalities,
racial backgrounds, religious perspectives, and cultural views.
May we all realize and live
from the silent joy and still happiness
of this Awakened Spirit Self.
Wishing you a blessed holiday season
filled with loving family, good friends,
and deep gratitude for life.
Let us continue to hold
the determined vision to actualize a world
where greed, aggression, and ignorance
are finally transformed into selfless giving, tolerance,
compassion, clarity, wisdom, and peace.
Merry Christmas, Joyful Solstice,
Happy Hanukkah, Peaceful Kwanzaa,
Blissful Buddha’s Enlightenment Bodhi Day.

I have always held a notion of a healthy society as one in which the two opposing elements, the conservative and the creative (or radical, or visionary, or whatever term is best applied to the dissident), exist in a mutual balance.
The conservative, with its vested interest in things as they are, holds onto the present, gives stability, and preserves established values (and keeps the banks open).
The visionary, always able to see the configuration of the future in present things, presses for change, experiment, the venture into new ways.
A truly creative artist is inevitably of this part of the society.

When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flocks,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among others,
To make music in the heart.

That kind of deep attention that we pay as children is something that I cherish,
that I think we all can cherish and reclaim,
because attention is that doorway to gratitude, the doorway to wonder,
the doorway to reciprocity.

Broken symmetry is imperfection, but rich in creativity.
The universe is created out of broken symmetry.
