I want to learn herbal medicine....

Does anyone know of a course in herbal medicine? Not for college "credit", just for personal enrichment. Or someone willing to share their knowledge?

check out the SW School of Botanical Medicine website. lots of information there, and they do distance learning courses if that appeals to you.

Online: Learning Herbs and HerbMentor have great courses for teaching self-reliant herbalism (self, family, community), some free content, plus paid for courses (paid for gives access to the online community as well). Susun Weed has lots of free content online (website and youtube), as well as paid for courses.

Also, if Paul Bergner is still doing his distance learning course then I would highly recommend that approach. He teaches the vitalist method descendant from the early Physiomedicalists (i.e. before pharmaceuticals and allopathy took over our medical system), which focuses on herbal actions, energetics, nutrition, lifestyle, etc.

My niece took a great course at UNC. They were using a great book, The Way of Herbs, which you could just read. I got a couple books from the stores in Cherokee NC. They have a new one out, the Banks book, based upon a 1950s college thesis deiscovered in an old house or something: Some guy interviewed some herb experts who are dead now.
I personally like J.T. Garrett's book.
I am not an herbalist AT ALL, but I keep books around.
Appalshop media center has a film about an Appalachian herbalist. He taught the guy at UNC. I cannotthink of his name.
Jon Pittman is herbalist for the Overhill Cherokee and he is on the Yahoo organic gardening group. A lot of people talk about herbs on that site, which is, however, mostly about gardening.

I am working with a vet named Patrick Jones. He has been using herbal remedies on animals and humans for well over 10 years. He has a philosophy of being a Home Grown Herbalist. His website is www.homegrownherbalist.net and the forums are at www.forum.homegrownherbalist.net. He has lots of documented cases that he has worked on. His most dramatic, from my perspective, is Miracle Max. Look for this on his blog.

He does not have a course or anything like that, but he is pretty quick to answer questions on our forum page.

Since we are also preppers learning your local herbs is heavily pushed. No sense getting used to using something from the other side of the globe when shipping is not available. This is why I use Michael Moore's book Medicinal Plants of the Mountain West as my prime source of information. He has several other books too including for the Pacific NW and the Desert and Canyonlands area.

I have studied through the Dominion Herbal College...they have been around since 1926. They focus on traditional North American Herbal Medicine, and have an excellent reputation. You can do almost all of their programs through distance learning. The more advanced programs do have a clinical placement requirement, but that can usually be arranged closer to your home. A little late to this thread, but I partook of the Herbal Academy of New England's pilot beginner herbalist pilot course last year and thought it quite good. They also have an advanced one as well.

I love the books I have by Matthew Woods as well and, as several someones already mentioned, Kiva Rose, Jim McDonald, Michael Moore, 7Song and Susun Weed are fantastic also.
