I want to put a fan in the ceiling of the room my wood stove is in, such that it is in the horizontal position blowing air up to the room above it.

I plan to cut out a space in the ceiling near and above the wood stove that will be roughly 14" by 14" between two floor joists to put the fan in.   It will be near the corner of the room, and I am hoping to be able to power the fan on the upstairs side of the fan, with a cord from the fan to a nearby outlet on the wall.  I plan to have some protective grate on both top and bottom of the fan.

Are there any fans made for this purpose and are DESIGNED to be used in this horizontal position?

Does anybody know of fans manufactured for this purpose and are "rated" to be used in this position?

I do not wish to be the beta tester for a fan that is not "rated" for this position so to all the genius McGyvers out there, please do not suggest just any fan.

Hi Woody,
A high CFM rated bathroom exhaust fan may do the trick for you. The better quality ones are quiet and look good with the ceiling cover.

if you can make another hole same size in the other corner of the room you will increase the air circulation significantly and the above room will heat up faster.

Only one active inlet and no passive outlet will create an over pressure in the room above and whisking the air in the top room.

It is one bedroom with a doorway to the open stairwell down to the first floor.

What if the doorway is left open to this stairwell?

Will that suffice?

I think that's a good way to create circulation. The fan will move more warm air, and the cooler air will naturally drain down to the lower level.

I like this idea though I would turn one fan over so that the air is being pulled to the part of the room you want warmest and then exhausted from the coolest corner thus causing the air to circulate.

This is awkward. I've grown a second evil head. I'm going to need a machete and a tiny ad ...
