I went to my local stove store this morning, they have a wide range of metal box stoves for sale.
In order to meet European pollution standards, the majority are  in a different league to the old style steel box.
I know it is difficult to find vermiculite board in the States but every stove in the shop is lined  with some form of vermiculite board!
Many stoves also have pre heated secondary air and special air control that avoids smoking logs.
They are all designed to run with insulated chimneys too!
Basically in the region where  I live you can no longer  buy the old style box stoves.

That's becoming common in urban/suburban areas, and it's not a bad thing. There are real health impacts from dumb steel boxes when concentrated in cities.

Out in the country you can probably get away with a lot more.

I'm sure these high efficiency stoves have an eyewatering price tag. Mine sure did, and that was a long time ago. But it was worth it!

The old style stoves were eliminated because of the bad gasses they produced, the new ones are more efficient as well so that may be a bonus.

I like that latch.  The weight of the handle holds it in the latch notch. Pull and it rocks up to release the latch. All out of the way and not swinging across the window or out side fire box foot print, elegant.    I will use that, only 3 parts latch pin, pivot pin and latch/handle.  Tom.
