I plant legumes the first year if i can (no perennial planned for the spot needing to go in). Strawberries have done well on newer hugel beds for me. Grapes did very well above and to the north/poleward of the strawberries. I plant shade loving ground covers behind them, or just chop and drop what grows on its own. By the time the grapes take over entirely, the first set of strawberry crowns are spent (year 2-3), but until then the mid day mid summer shade helps the fruit throughout the growing season.
This is all just my opinion based on a flawed memory
