It seems one of my layers had an artistic expression. While I've seen a bump of extra shell material on the end of an egg before, and even something resembling two concentric rings, in nine years of having laying hens I've never seen a swirl or spiral before. Pretty neat I think.

It makes me wonder if the egg rotates during formation.
We have some Khaki Campbell ducks that when you look at the shell, you see a faint pattern of a spiral all the way up the shell. It isn't raised, but it's as if there is thinner shell and thicker shell bands.
So that suggests you may be right, at least in some birds.
